Almond Joy?

Almond growers are calling for an end of the USDA-mandated treatment program for California-grown raw almonds. The mandate calls for the almonds to be "pasteurized" by either propylene oxide (a toxic fumigant recognized as a carcinogen by the EPA) or steam-heated before they can be sold to American consumers. Foreign grown almonds are not held to the same standards and are therefore quickly replacing California-grown almonds in the marketplace.
